Book Reviews - Computer and Internet

HTML, Java, CGI, etc.

How Networks Work: Millenium Edition,Les Freed and Frank Dertler
This was one of the books I used to help me pass the CIW Foundations exam. It is a good introduction and the illustrations are particularly helpful.
For more info on CIW, see the CIW Resources page.

HTML Goodies,Joe Burns
I have found this to be very well-written and useful as a reference. Covers HTML 4.0 and it's different flavors, frames, tables, CSS, a little JavaScript, etc. The Web site is a plus.

Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours,Les Freed and Frank Dertler
Another very good HTML book.

JavaScript Goodies,Joe Burns
Joe Burns does for JavaScript what his other book does for HTML: easy to read, step-by-step approach to learning coupled with an excellent Web site.

Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Deluxe Learning Edition,Michael Halvorson
This set includes:
1) Visual Basic 6.0 Learning Edition
2) Two books: Visual Basic 6.0 Step by Step and Visual Basic 6.0 Programmer's Guide
3) A multimedia learning tool, Learn Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Now, on CDROM
4) The current MSDN Library on CD with a coupon for the next release at no charge.
This is an inexpensive way to get a copy of the latest version of VB and a set of learning tools. From what I've read, you will not learn enough here to pass the MCSD exams, but the books that prepare you for the exams are not tutorials for total beginners. If you are new to VB, I suggest you start here (or with another book if you already have a copy of VB) and then go to the MCSD page to find books that will prepare you for certification. Note this method is not free, but it is one helluva lot less than paying thousands for classroom training and you can go at your own pace.

The Leadership Engine: How Winning Companies Build Leaders at Every Level, Noel Tichy with Eli Cohen
Why Don't more business leaders come out of IS? Learn how to create leaders, why teaching is such an important part of leadership, etc. The interview in the 12/22/97 issue of Computerworld is highly recommended.
Decline and Fall of the American Programmer,Ed Yourdon
All developers should read this book.
Modern Structured Analysis,Ed Yourdon
Structured Design: Fundamentals of a Discipline of Computer Program and System Design,Ed Yourdon
The above two books belong on the desks of anyone developing business application software. I wish the computer science/information systems departments at our universities would start using these as textbooks so I would not have to teach their graduates what a Structure Chart is and other fundamental software development concepts.
Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams,Tom DeMarco and Tim Lister
It seems like I've been reading Tom DeMarco since I started in the computer field, and his books are always a good, informative read. In the second edition of Peopleware, concepts such as performance reviews and MBO are skewered.
