Hemingway: Favorite Works and Related Books

True at First Light

Critics have said that this is an attempt by Hemingway's estate and publisher to cash in one last time. I disagree.

While this is not A Farewell to Arms, I found it to be an interesting tale of Hemingway's time in Africa; his wife's month's-long hunt of a large black maned lion, his apparent affair with an African woman, and his interactions with those surrounding him make the book a worthwhile read. Had the man ever finished it himself, I am sure it would have been much better. But his son Patrick wrote a very good forward and did a credible job of editing.

If you enjoy his work, you'll enjoy this book. If you lean more toward Fitzgerald or Faulkner, you probably won't.

A couple of my favorite quotes:
In reference to a man being called childish: " . . . it is never a reproach that he has kept a child's heart, a child's honesty and a child's freshness and nobility."
A possible foreshadowing: "I'm not hopeless because I have hope. The day I haven't you'll know it bloody quick."

A Farewell to Arms
Drawing deeply from his own experiences, Hemingway gives us a tragic romance set against the Italian front of the War to End All Wars.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
You've heard people say "Did the earth move?". It is an allusion to one of the most memorable passages in all of American literature. Hemingway's crowning achievement and perhaps the greatest American work of fiction, all the major issues of love, war, courage, loyalty, friendship and death are crammed into a 72 hour period.

The Sun Also Rises
American and English expatriates wander aimlessly through France and Spain. Provides insight into the "Lost Generation", the running of the bulls, and bullfighting.

Islands in the Stream
"True pain is only cured by death." The man knew whereof he spoke. The book is much better than the movie starring George C. Scott.

Complete Short Stories of Earnest Hemingway: The Finca Vigia Edition
Everything from "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" to Nick Adams is here, plus some writings from unfinished novels.

A Moveable Feast
I am sorry I waited so long to read this. Fascinating stories of a young, happily married starving artist and people such as Gertrude Stein and Fitzgerald. Learn where the phrase "Lost Generation" came from. Very highly recommended.

Hemingway in Love and War,by Agnes Von Kuransky
The movie, Love and War, was based on this book. Provides much insight into the young Hemingway and perhaps his later actions.

Papa Hemingway, by A.E. Hotchner
"Hotch" was a close friend of Hemingway for decades. I have the hardcover of this book, and you can enjoy this new paperback edition. Any fan of Hemingway should read this memoir, full of quotes from Papa and wonderful anecdotes.
