Name That
Song
Remember
Who Sang These Words?
"Have you ever been a victim in a violent fight
When you know it's not
true and you know it's not right
Got not one ounce or inch of
control
You got lust for blood runnin' in your soul
You know if every
person upon this earth
Became the image of the mother in a violent
birth
We could sow the seed, to stop this sand
And heal this brutal,
beat-up land."

Elton
John, Songs from the West Coast
On
Songs
from the West Coast, Elton John puts the ballad bombast to bed for
the most part, and returns to the stripped-back, man-and-his-piano
arrangements from earlier in his career. He invites one of today's most
notable singer-songwriters, Rufus Wainwright, to guest on a track, and
Bernie Taupin's lyrics for the single "I Want Love" are some of his most
sincerely touching in recent memory.

Carole
King, Love Makes the World
One of the world's most famous female songwriters, Carole King has
offered up tunes that have become classics for other singers (such as
Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman") as well as songs that have remained
exclusively her own. Her soft rasp complements the mellow, soothing
collection on
Love
Makes the World, and there's more than one song here that her fans
will be humming for years to come.

Jude,
King of Yesterday
From the CD cover, one might think that Jude has turned into a Bee Gee.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
King
of Yesterday is the acclaimed pop-rock soloist's second album, and
the disc is filled with great songs where sweet, melodic verses climax into
incredibly catchy choruses. Fans of Semisonic and Ben Folds will find a lot
to like in this disc.

Mandy
Moore, Mandy Moore
With Willa Ford, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, and a dozen more
girls vying for the crown of teen pop, the last album released by Mandy
Moore, another among the honey-haired court, was unjustly drowned out by
the clamor. Her
self-titled
CD is surprisingly mature. It's pure pop, but she pulls back on the
overarching achey vocals that all the others try to emulate, and she
experiments with Eastern influences and acoustic guitar to great effect.
The ballads aren't sappy, and the dance tracks are surprisingly
sophisticated. Mandy's growing up, and so is her music.

Squeeze,
Greatest Hits
Squeeze were one of the few groups of the '80s new wave era that never
sacrificed substance for style. The collaboration between the group's main
songwriting duo, Chris
Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, resulted in a sound
that fell squarely between the Beatles and the Kinks, and while Squeeze
were never as popular as either of those bands (especially in the U.S.),
songs such as "Cool for Cats," "Coffee in Bed," and "Tempted" strike a
pleasantly nostalgic chord with anyone who grew up singing along to their
enduring songs.

Toploader,
Onka's Big Moka
Drawing from inspiration that is equal parts Stevie Wonder, Counting
Crows, and Lenny Kravitz, the U.K. group Toploader dishes out a breezy
version of classic '70s rock and funk on
Onka's
Big Moka, but follow the lead of Beck or Gomez by adding modern
flourishes (hip-hop rhythms, synthesizers) to the mix. Further, the band's
lyrics overflow with positivity.

Flashback
Electronic,
Electronic
At the dawn of the 1990s, three of the biggest stars in British
alternative music collaborated on one of the best alternapop albums of the
decade.
New
Order's lead singer Bernard Sumner, the
Smiths'
guitarist Johnny Marr, and, in a limited role, the
Pet
Shop Boys' Neil Tennant formed Electronic, whose
self-titled
album combined Marr's chiming guitar, Sumner's plaintive yet hopeful
lyrics, and synthesized melodies that ranged from gorgeous and ethereal to
outright danceable. The result was a self-contained movement in music with
a sound that would be coopted (but never quite duplicated or outdone) by
many artists in pop and R&B.

Billy
Joel, Turnstiles
The crank of a turnstile represents a departure from a place that
cannot be returned to, a fitting metaphor for Billy Joel's 1976 release,
which is full of late-night contemplations and introspective ballads.
Turnstiles
contains only eight songs, but the elongated tunes include classics "Say
Goodbye to Hollywood" and "New York State of Mind."
