New and Notable
Glitter
Mariah Carey, et al
The release of Mariah Carey's Glitter was delayed due to the well-publicized psychological difficulties she suffered, and we wish her the best on her road back to well-being. Her new album, the soundtrack to her first feature film, offers a collection of lite-funk dance tracks and ballads displaying her gymnastic vocals.

Rockin' the Suburbs
Ben Folds
Ben Folds leaves the Five behind (actually, it was only two) in pursuit of a solo venture. Despite the tongue-in-cheek title, little of the clever humor from his previous efforts is found on Rockin' the Suburbs. Instead, he wisely opts to show off his talent for majestic, plaintive songwriting, indicating that he's even better at being sad than funny.

A Funk Odyssey
Jamiroquai
Fans who can never get enough of Jamiroquai's heavily Stevie Wonder-influenced retro funk and disco will not be disappointed by their third release, A Funk Odyssey, which rides that groovy continuum through all 11 tracks.

Face 2 Face
Babyface
R&B smoothie Kenneth Edmonds, a.k.a. Babyface, makes an about-face on Face 2 Face (phew!), his first album in four years. Here, the crooner cranks up the beats, with the help of the must-have producing team the Neptunes. Listeners expecting his usual sultry ballads are in for a pleasant jolt.

Editor's Choice
No More Drama
Mary J. Blige
Hip-hop's reigning woman secures her position with the concrete-solid release No More Drama. The Dr. Dre-produced single, "Family Affair," bounces with an irresistible rhythm that will get people on the dance floor faster than anything else you'll hear this year, and the rest of the album surges with her soul-drenched vocals, positive message, and a fearless command of the styles her multiple producers bring to the studio.

Backstreet Boys DVD
Backstreet Boys - Around the World
A well-edited glimpse into a day in the life of the Backstreet Boys, Around the World shows the guys flying a plane and the media madness for the Black and Blue tour around the globe--which lasted 100 hours and stopped in five cities.

Back to Blondie
Parallel Lines
Blondie
From punk to new wave to pop, Blondie rode the wave of music trends from the late '70s through the '80s, experimenting in reggae and, of course, rap, with the groundbreaking single "Rapture." With lead singer Debbie Harry's movie-star beauty and the band's New York-underground lifestyle, Blondie had the perfect credentials for superstardom and critical acclaim. Their catalog has just been reissued, and all discs contain either demos, live tracks, or extended remixes.

Featured on NPR
The Ghost of Fashion
Clem Snide
If you are a fan of the popular NBC sitcom Ed, you may have driven yourself crazy trying to figure out who sings the show's theme song. We can return you to your sanity; it's Clem Snide, and the band was recently featured on NPR's All Things Considered. Their latest album, The Ghost of Fashion, contains the same alt-country-rock sensibility you love in the theme song.

Featured Bargain of the Week
Greatest Hits
The Bangles
While the longing ballad "Eternal Flame" was one of the Bangles' biggest hits, it does not accurately describe their career--the group burned out and broke up shortly after the release of this single. Still, their Greatest Hits collection shows that the Bangles were more than a pop music footnote. The overtly commercial "Walk Like an Egyptian" might only work well at retro parties, but songs like "In Your Room" and their velvet-cloaked cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade of Winter" still sound fresh.

Great Read
Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones
