New and Notable
Gold (Limited Edition) [EXTRA TRACKS]
Ryan Adams
Love him or loathe him, the hyper-prolific Ryan
Adams seems to stir up emotion and generate controversy just as fast as he
pumps out music. Already a music veteran at age 26, Adams is an enormously
talented singer-songwriter who hasn't quite learned to harness his talent.
Without question, Gold is filled with a number of delightful and
endearing moments, but there's a certain kid-in-a-candy-store studio mentality
that tends to obscure the truly fine cuts here. A little self-editing (or
outside guidance) would be welcome, but Gold has enough going
for it to make it worthwhile for sure.

The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001
George Jones
Remarkably, Mr. Jones has still got it; at age 70,
his voice is largely intact and as expressive as ever. His BNA debut offers
many powerful cuts, and while his duet with Garth Brooks on "Beer Run" isn't
one of them, it's good for a goof--even though Jones can sing rings around ol'
Garth. Still, the best tracks here have a depth and feeling that only Possum
can deliver, and it's nice to see him stave off the rocking chair once
again.

Timeless: Hank Williams Tribute
Various Artists
The beauty of this star-studded tribute to Hank
Williams is in its diversity. Artists ranging from Johnny Cash, Lucinda
Williams, Hank III, and Emmylou Harris to Bob Dylan, Keb' Mo', Beck, and Sheryl
Crow offer compelling interpretations of Williams's songs--some stay close to
Williams's style, some to their own, and some split the difference. Some
less-than-obvious song choices help, too.

Alright Guy
Gary Allan
Gary Allan is the rare Nashville cat with both
brains and beauty, not to mention a terrific and distinctive voice. Following
up 1999's excellent
Smoke Rings in
the Dark, Allan offers Alright Guy, which
provides little in the way of honky-tonk, but still has plenty of surprising
and creative detours, including the wonderful album-closing homage to Willie
Nelson.
