New and Notable
Pull My Chain
Toby Keith
For most of the 1990s, Toby Keith did little to distinguish himself among the country mainstream, yet always managed to hang around the edges of stardom. Of course that all changed with his 1999 breakthrough, How Do You Like Me Now, which plastered him all over TV and radio and catapulted him to the upper echelon. This follow-up sticks close to its predecessor's formula with its blend of country, pop, and rock, and its combination of swagger and sentiment.

Here Come The Derailers
Derailers
For their Sony/Lucky Dog debut, retro-tonkers the Derailers turn to veteran producer Kyle Lehning, who's best known for his work with Randy Travis. Gravitational Forces
Robert Earl Keen
Keen's two-album tenure on Arista met with mixed results as the Texan moved ever so slightly in a slicker direction, producing albums that were good (Walking Distance was very good), though not up to his usual high standards. Keen's debut for Mercury's Lost Highway imprint, his first record in three years, is clearly a return to top form as the singer-songwriter finds a more organic sound and delivers his most memorable collection of tunes in some time.

Earl Scruggs & Friends
Earl Scruggs
Longtime fans of the banjo master may remember Scruggs's star-studded "family and friends" albums from decades ago. Now he's introduced to a new generation of fans (and artists) on this collection, which, typically for an all-star affair, ranges from the subpar to the sublime. Guests range from Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, and Travis Tritt to Elton John, Sting, John Fogerty, and Melissa Etheridge. The varied guest list makes for surprises both good and bad.
