The exploits of Catfish on the diamond have been well documented. Most fans are probably aware of his many charity activities. I would like to relate my own meeting of the Catfish.
Years ago, I decided to run by the Walmart to pick something up. To my surprise, I walked in the door and saw Hall-of-Famer Catfish signing baseballs for charity. I don't remember which charity, but I remember his graciousness and obvious humility.
Having been a fan for years and once having a part-time sports card business, I've met serveral athletes. I have not found them to be the spoiled brats that they are often thought of, but Catfish was a common man who accepted the greatness of his talent and adulation of his public as few men could.
We Yankee fans have lost two of the greatest members of our "family" in recent months. Catfish, we will remember you fondly.
