Places in the Heart
Unfortunately, most folks remember Sally Field's
"You really like me" Oscar® acceptance speech more than the heartfelt
performance that won her the award. Writer-director Robert Benton's film of his
hometown (Waxahachie, Texas) during the depression finds the suddenly widowed
Edna Spalding (Field) forced to toughen up to save her farm. This beautiful
movie has an unforgettable, graceful ending and features an outstanding cast
(including John Malkovich, Danny Glover, Amy Madigan, and Ed Harris), with many
now-marquee actors making their first cinematic impression. The film debuts on
DVD this month.

A Christmas Carol
OK, let's start an argument: this made-for-TV
version of Charles Dickens's Christmas tale is the best version ever made.
There have been numerous productions, but George C. Scott's take on Ebenezer
Scrooge challenges Alastair Sim's for the title of best Scrooge on film. While
the 1951 version eerily uses black and white film to play with the dark corners
of the story, this 1984 version has the great asset of being in color. Take the
glorious setting for the Ghost of Christmas Present. In this version, an
extra-tall Edward Woodward comes on the scene joyous and fat to show the feast
of Christmas. There before our eyes are the glistening, fabulous foods that
Dickens goes out of his way to describe in his story. Available for under $20,
this disc will help you prepare for the upcoming holiday season.
