Web Protocols and Practice: HTTP/1.1, Networking Protocols, Caching, and Traffic Measurement
by Balachander Krishnamurthy, Jennifer Rexford
Web Protocols and Practice: HTTP/1.1, Networking
Protocols, Caching, and Traffic Measurement describes the
technical underpinnings of the World Wide Web--the technology for
transferring, caching, and measuring the messages that carry the
content between Web sites and end users. The messages are exchanged
between clients, proxies, and servers: the three main software
components of the Web. The format and transfer of these messages are
dictated by communication protocols codifed in standards documents
over a period of years. Evaluating and improving Web performance
relies on having effective techniques for collecting and analyzing
measurements of the message traffic. By moving Web content closer to
the end users, caching reduces user-perceived latency, as well as
load on the Web servers and the underlying network. Web traffic is
moving from delivery of text and image content to include audio and
video streaming. Multimedia streaming has its own suite of
communication protocols. These topics, constituting the technical
core of the Web, are discussed in detail in this book. --From the

Professional Java XML
by Kal Ahmed, et al
Professional Java XML covers the full
scope of both Java and XML. We develop applications with the Java
Enterprise platform and its array of sophisticated components and
programming interfaces. Similarly, we explore a full range of XML
techniques, such as XSL transformation, querying with XPath, and
validation with XML Schema and DTD using state-of-the-art Java XML
tools. This book brings together the enabling technologies of Java
and XML, and shows you how to develop applications that exploit the
best features of each. --From the publisher
Java Servlet Programming (2nd Edition)
by Jason Hunter, William Crawford (Contributor)
Java Servlet Programming, Second Edition
is a superb introduction to Java Servlets and their various
communications mechanisms. It includes deep and comprehensive
coverage of the Java Servlet API, and also of HTTP, non-HTTP socket
communications, Remote Method Invocation (RMI), and more. Throughout,
the authors present excellent illustrative code and go to much effort
to explain why things work the way they do.
XSLT Programmer's Reference 2nd Edition
by Michael Kay
As XML begins to take hold, the eXtensible Stylesheet
Language: Transformation (XSLT) standard will be playing a major role
in making all those XML predictions a reality. Author Michael Kay
exudes enthusiasm in this guide, XSLT Programmer's
Reference, by taking every opportunity to illustrate the
power and flexibility of XSLT.
Installing and Configuring Apache Web Server
by Melanie Hoag
The newest in Gearhead's Point to Point series, this book
invites readers to join a project team as it works through the
complexities of planning, installing, configuring, administering,
customizing, and troubleshooting Apache on Linux or Windows NT and
Windows 2000 to create a functional Web server for a small business
or a division of a large corporation. Starting from scratch, the
author leads readers through each phase of the implementation,
comparing popular Linux distributions and how they work with Apache
and its extensions, examining the Apache architecture, publishing Web
content, and monitoring an Apache Web server for usage and
performance. Because “what can go wrong will go wrong,”
an entire chapter is devoted to hardware and software
troubleshooting. Installation and configuration of Web server
extensions and add-ons--such as active scripting, Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL) encryption, antivirus protection, and PHP--are also
included. --From the publisher
E-maginer Luxury Pack
E-Maginer Luxury Pack
Cryonetworks
With 14 included 3-D universes such as "Snow-surf-skate"
and "Scientist-Hacker," the E-maginer Luxury Pack lets users generate
creative and dynamic virtual worlds. Download textures, objects, and
music from your favorite Web sites to enhance your creations, or use
the "World Modeller" option to customize a new architecture for your
Web site. Use the rotate tool to animate objects on your site, or
engage in role playing games with visitors to your 3-D universe.
There's even a camera that lets you broadcast what's going on around
the site. Guess you can be in two places at one time after all.
SCS Site Construction Kit
Cryonetworks
A professional Web site development tool that allows
novices and experts alike to build creative and dynamic Web sites,
SCS is based on the SCOL DMS (Distributed Modules System)
architecture. As a result, you can create entire Web sites by
combining modules, without ever having to write a line of code. Each
of the available modules manages a specific function of your site,
such as 3-D spaces, banners, or an administrative interface. In
addition to the 100 modules, the application also includes 3,500
textures and 800 3-D objects. Experienced designers can even create
new objects and 3-D spaces and import them into SCS using the 3-D
converter.
